For a December week, book Cancún if you will leave the resort even once, and Punta Cana if you will not. That is the entire decision; everything below is detail. We priced these five adults-only all-inclusive resorts on Sept 4, across six Friday-to-Sunday weekends running from early December into the first week of January. All five returned a rate on all six weekends, and the band across the whole set ran from $432 to $1,390 a night — every figure all-inclusive, which matters for the maths later.

Which Coast Has the Better Beach in December?
Punta Cana by length, Cancún by sand. The Bávaro stretch runs more than 20 miles and you can walk an hour from El Cortecito without leaving it; the Cancún Hotel Zone is a 14-mile sandbar with a road down the middle. But Cancún's sand is fine white limestone that stays cool at 2 pm, and Bávaro's is coarser. The water is the real split: the east-facing side of the Hotel Zone, roughly Kilometre 10 to 20, takes open Caribbean swell and flies red flags on windy days, while the beaches around Punta Cancún at Kilometre 9 sit in the lee of Isla Mujeres and are flat. Punta Cana is the reverse — Bávaro and Cap Cana's Juanillo beach are reef-protected, while Uvero Alto has surf.
What Do You Give Up by Staying in Punta Cana?
Everything that is not the resort. From the Cancún Hotel Zone, Isla Mujeres is a 20-minute ferry from Puerto Juárez, the cenotes around Puerto Morelos are 40 minutes south, and Chichén Itzá is a long day but a real one. From Bávaro there is Saona Island, sold as a boat trip in the lobby, and the resort. If you think you might want a Tuesday in Valladolid, book Cancún.
Where We Would Stay on Each Coast
In Cancún we would book Secrets The Vine, the adults-only tower at Kilometre 14.5 with the ocean on one side and the Nichupté Lagoon on the other. The trade-off is a high-rise rather than a sprawl: fewer pools, every room a view. Ask for the ocean side above the tenth floor; the lagoon side is cheaper and has the sunset, but the surf sound is the reason you came. Typically $471–$1,068 a night across all six weekends, lowest median of the five at $503, cheapest Dec 18–20 — check your dates.
Second in Cancún is Live Aqua at Kilometre 12.5, and it wins on the pool, the best in the Hotel Zone, and on a beach calmer than The Vine's. What it loses is the room: the standard rooms are older and smaller. Typically $432–$693 a night, cheapest Dec 18–20 — check your dates. That $432 was the lowest weekend we saw anywhere, though its $635 median runs above The Vine's.
In Punta Cana we would book Zoëtry Agua in Uvero Alto: the smallest of the five, thatched suites in a garden on a beach with surf, and the one Punta Cana resort here that does not feel like a compound. The catch is 45 minutes from the airport, which for a week that never leaves the resort is no catch at all. Ask at check-in to book the à-la-carte dinners for the whole stay; the best slots are gone by the second evening. Typically $469–$1,242 a night, cheapest Dec 11–13 — check your dates.
Secrets Royal Beach on El Cortecito beach in Bávaro is the big-resort version: 641 suites, calm water, a beach you can walk for an hour either way, 25 minutes from the airport. It held the steadiest price on the list, typically $504–$799 a night, cheapest Dec 11–13 — check your dates.
Skip Secrets Cap Cana for a first trip. Typically $824–$1,390 a night, cheapest Dec 18–20 — check your dates — the most expensive resort on either coast on every weekend we priced, and roughly double Secrets Royal Beach for the same brand on the same coast. Juanillo is the calmest beach of the lot, but that is what the money buys.
Getting There and Around
Cancún's airport is 20 to 30 minutes from the Hotel Zone by pre-booked transfer; Punta Cana's is 25 minutes to Bávaro, 15 to Cap Cana and 45 to Uvero Alto. Both have long immigration queues when the Saturday charters land between noon and 4 pm, so a weekday morning arrival is worth more than it looks. Both are about four hours from the East Coast, so the flight does not decide this; book it through Luxvibe's flight search and the booking, the PNR and any cancellation stay in your account alongside the hotel. You need no car on either coast: the Hotel Zone has a bus every few minutes down Kukulcán, taxis are fixed-rate, and every day trip sells a transfer.
